Winnetka is a small suburban town located 14 miles north of downtown Chicago and resides in New Trier Township. It is a long established location with the first homes built in 1836 and as such is made up of tranquil tree-shaded streets and family-oriented neighborhoods as well as three quaint in-town business districts that are home to a variety of shops and businesses. Today, Winnetka is known as one of the most expensive and luxurious villages in the U.S. The median income is over $275,000 and the average single family home in 2008 was an amazing $1,462,558! Winnetka real estate is doing very well. The top 50 luxury homes in Winnetka typically sell for at least $4 million.
In a town such as Winnetka there are going to be many wonderful aspects that just couldn’t be afforded by most local governments. The parks and activities are wonderful with four public beaches, a boat launch, numerous parks, athletic fields, an indoor tennis club, ice rink, public golf course and forest preserve areas can be enjoyed by Winnetka residents. Crime is very low. The Winnetka beach is one of the nicest along any stretch of Lake Michigan.
The Winnetka Public Schools system (District 36) consists of three elementary schools and two middle schools - Hubbard Woods, Crow Island, and Samuel Sewall Greeley Elementary. These schools serve grades kindergarten through four. Students in fifth and sixth grades attend The Skokie School. Seventh and eighth graders attend Washburne School, named after educator Carleton Washburne. Winnetka's schools were modeled after Washburne's educational philosophy in an experiment called the Winnetka Plan. The town's schools continue to reflect his educational philosophy.
Public school students who reside in Winnetka attend New Trier High School for grades 9 through 12. New Trier has been consistently listed in many national magazines and newspapers as one of the top high schools in the country and spends over $15,000 yearly per student. The curriculum is demanding, rich and offers a large variety of educational opportunities.
